Live Oak Plantation homebred Souper Speedy battled adversity and the elements to take the $150,000 Jaipur S. run over the sloppy main track at Belmont on Friday, June 7th.

Under Jose Lezcano, the son of Indian Charlie raced five wide early, then moved within striking distance three furlongs from home. Souper Speedy tackled the leader with an eighth of a mile to go, and earned the victory while being carried out and severely bumped in full flight near the wire.

Final time for the 7 furlongs on the sealed surface was 1:22.09. The Japiur--scheduled as a Grade 3 before heavy rains moved the race off the turf--marked the first stakes victory for Souper Speedy, who won his last career start by more than 10 lengths at the same 7-furlong distance.

Out of the Gone West mare Speed Succeeds, Souper Speedy is a half brother to Grade 1 winner and millionaire Brilliant Speed, who stood his first year at stud this season. Trained by Tom Albertrani, he has compiled a record of 7-3-2-1 and earnings of $231,634 to date.
