Live Oak Plantation was the winning bidder on a Distorted Humor filly from the family of sterling broodmare Better Than Honour, going to $1 million during the Aug. 5 session of the Fasig-Tipton selected yearling sale in Saratoga Springs.

The filly was one of only two horses that sold for seven figures during the Aug. 5 session of the two-day sale.

Live Oak purchased a total of five yearlings at the sale for a total of $2,505,000

The Distorted Humor filly, hip No. 23 was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency and bred in Kentucky by Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings and Edward McGhee out of the stakes-winning A.P. Indy mare Cascading. Better Than Honour, the stakes-winning third dam of the filly, produced four stakes winners, including Belmont S. (G1) winners Rags to Riches and Jazil.

“She is very balanced and has plenty of sense to her,” said Live Oak general manager Bruce Hill, who signed the winning ticket. “She is a very nice filly. She went for a little more then what we appraised her at, but we expected to pay a high price. If we find a good horse, we will go beyond our appraisal price.”

"I thought she was a million-dollar filly and beyond that. I don't think you get to see a filly like that very often. If you judge her physically, she's a really good specimen," reflected John Sikura of Hill 'n' Dale after the filly passed through the ring. "She really has everything and if I wasn't in this pedigree and I was bidding on this filly, I'd give that or more for her. It was a very fair price and I respect Live Oak that bought her.”

Live Oak's second-highest purchase was hip No. 73, a $500,000 colt by Tapit out of Kalahari Cat, the dam of 2013 Grade 3 Spiral S. winner Black Onyx as well as Straight Line S. winner Francois.

Hip No. 27, a dark bay colt by Arch, was a $435,000 purchase. The Florida bred is the first foal out of Century Park, winner of the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel S.

Live Oak went to $350,000 for hip No. 126, a bay colt by War Front. The colt comes from a top-class European female family that includes her third dam Caerlina (IRE), winner of the Grade 1 French Oaks and European highweight filly in two different divisions.

The final yearling purchase of the quintet is hip No. 124, a filly by Kitten's Joy. Out of the Smart Strike mare Smart Trade, the Kentucky-bred filly has a catalog page full of black-type winners such as Switch (G1 La Brea S.), champions Anees, and Gold and Ivory.
